“The New Life Missionary Baptist Church, located on Bond Street was originally known as the North Baltimore German Methodist Episcopal Church, started in 1871 in a Sunday school building on Aisquith Street by the South Baltimore German Methodists, becoming a separate church in 1874, and the present church was built in 1895. In 1914 they merged with the Broadway German M. E. Church and the combined groups took the new name First German M. E. Church. In 1944, the name was changed to Lafayette Avenue Methodist Church, and then to St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, finally becoming the New Life Missionary Baptist Church in 1973.”
