“Center Market, located on the south side of Pennsylvania Avenue where the National Archives now stands, was one of Washington’s most popular markets, and the largest in the country in its time. Its disappearance in 1931 was a blow to downtown Washington’s life as a “walking city.” The Center Market buildings, erected in 1871, were designed by German-American architect Adolf Cluss.”
