Carl Herrmann had been born in Germany in the mid-1860s and came to the United States as a young man. He settled in Middletown, and began working for another German, a baker, called Jacob Stueck. In 1910, he opened his own delicatessen shop on Main Street, and enjoyed a prosperous life. All that changed when World War I broke out, and Carl and his entire family became victims of fanatical anti-German hatred.

His house and shop were vandalized in August 1918 along with many other German-American businesses and residences. Despite this, Carl remained in Middletown until his death in 1939. His deli business thrived, and his son continued to operate the shop until the 1970s.

The house is now a private residence.
