Home of town’s founder, Nicholas Scherer, who immigrated from Saarland, Germany, to the US in 1846. He settled the community in 1865.

“Almost everyone who lived here was German at the time,” he says. “The whole Tri-Town area was—St. John, Dyer and Schererville. One remainder from Schererville’s past is the home where Nicholas and Frances Scherer lived which is still standing. At 33 Wilhelm St., on the street behind the police station, the house was built in 1866. The town bought it a few years ago and is working to restore it to provide a place to educate about Schererville’s pioneer life and for the Schererville Historic Society to meet and house their collections.”
