“The Society to Preserve H.L. Mencken’s Legacy, Inc. was founded in 2003 for the purpose of restoring the then vacant and deteriorating Mencken house, re-opening and operating the museum, and informing and educating local and national audiences about the life and writings of Henry Louis Mencken in the City of Baltimore, by faithfully restoring and preserving his home, his furnishings and collections, and by offering exhibits and programs that highlight his legacy and contribute to the understanding of the “Sage of Baltimore” and his literary legacy.

Founding members include the Baltimore Sun Papers, the Enoch Pratt Library, the Maryland Historical Society, the Friends of the H.L. Mencken House, the Mencken Society, the Union Square Association, and Goucher College.”
