The mural depicts images that shaped Jasper from about 200 years ago: farming, a handshake to seal the deal, a mill to grind the crops, logging, train transportation, St. Joseph’s Church, veterans who fought for our freedoms and a patent for the roll top desk and other wood working companies. The Strassenfest and partner cities celebrate the German heritage that founded Jasper.

The maypole is another nod to Jasper’s German past, as these tall wooden poles are commonly erected throughout the German-speaking parts of Europe to celebrate the arrival of spring. While the origins are unknown, there may be a connection to pagan traditions surround May 1 that were absorbed into Christianity and modern times. It is the only maypole in the entire state of Indiana.
