The mural in downtown Jasper depicts the people and objects that shaped the town, along with the saying “Jasper, born from rich soil.” It underwent a redesign, funded by the Jasper Deutscher Verein, in 2016. The maypole standing beside it is an explicit nod to Jasper’s German heritage; maypoles are commonly erected throughout the German-speaking parts of Europe to celebrate the arrival of spring. Jasper’s maypole, created by Jim Corn with assistance from Judy Bennett and Harold Burton, features plaques representing Jasper and its German sister city, Pfaffenweiler.
