“Founded in 1858, the Sängerbund has long been a significant contributor among German-American organizations in maintaining and promoting its cultural heritage. Having endured the consequences of the Civil War, two World Wars and the Depression years, the organization, originally based in Hartford, has made its home in Newington since 1966. At the heart of its activities are the Choral groups, which meet each Friday evening from September through June. Since 1984, Bierfests featuring bands from Germany have been a significant club activity. Held every other year, these festivals have been highly successful in bringing together the German-American community both locally and from throughout Connecticut in an atmosphere of congeniality and good fellowship. It is truly an international event as evidenced by the response of residents within the town of Newington. There is much to be enjoyed in being a part of the club as the description of HSB activities indicates. The club is open every Friday evening throughout the year, so come on down and welcome, in German “Willkommen.”
