“The American Turners were founded in 1867 and incorporated in 1879 with the intent to promote physical education and disseminate rational ideas in order to advance health, happiness, prosperity, and the progress of the mankind. The Clinton Turners, originally called the Clinton Turnverein, were founded in December of 1867 with 30 original members. In 1888, the Clinton Turners took part in their first gymnastics competition in Springfield, MA. The Turners were represented by nine members, who won the first class prize along with several individual prizes. In 1891, the New England District Turnfest was held in Clinton. The Clinton Turners still stand with their original slogan, “A Sound Mind in a Sound Body””
