A group of Freemasons from Arminius Lodge No. 25 F.A.A.M. during the Depression years of the 1930’s decided to have a monthly social meeting which would entertain their wives and friends in a family-style affair. The 1st Saturday of each month was set aside for the social activities which were held at the homes of various members and consisted of Kaffeeklatch, card games and dancing.
The success of these meetings led to the idea of having an annual dance on a broader basis, thence the Arminius Social Club was formed and the 1st dance was held at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. in 1933. The growth of the club led to other activities including picnics, oyster roasts, and after a suspension of activities from 1939 through 1946 during World War II, dances and activities were resumed in 1947. In the following decade, activities continued and in 1958 the Arminius Social became incorporated in Washington, D.C.
The club then began to serve the German area community with many social activities including offering charter flights and trips to Germany. In the 1960’s, the club’s dance schedule grew to 10 functions a year and were moved to the Rock Creek Council Knights of Columbus in Bethesda, MD and stayed at that location until 1987. During this time, the club also sponsored a German Radio Hour program which was eventually discontinued.
