Learning a trade offers excellent career opportunities. Germany is known for its dual vocational training system, which combines learning the theoretical foundations of a chosen industry at a vocational school with practical, hands-on, and supervised work sessions at a company.
The German model, which is also used in Austria and Switzerland, is gaining traction in the United States. German companies with production facilities in the USA took the dual vocational training model with them and established training programs as early as the 1970s. Today, car manufacturers such as BMW and Volkswagen, but also Siemens and Bosch who have locations in the U.S., continue to attract and train skilled workers with this “earn while you learn” approach.
