“Volkssports are family-oriented, amateur athletic events. They are casual, though well-organized, adventures in health, recreation, fellowship, and fun. Volkssports evolved to be non-competitive from running races in Germany and have spread to many other countries. Participants come from the general public, and all are welcome to participate.
At the events, participants may track their event and distance achievements in volkssport books. Certificates are awarded for the distance covered as well as the number of events completed. Usually, volkssport events are walks of 5 or 10 kilometers (3.1 or 6.2 miles), with most accessible to families with strollers and wheelchairs with some modifications to the basic route.
The Sandpipers charge $3 per event, which includes stamping the volkssport books if desired. Children under 12 and under who do not keep books may walk for free.
Although membership is not required to participate in Sandpiper events, you are welcome to join our club and receive our newsletter which is sent out via email monthly. Membership is free!”
